To Coach or Lead: Leadership Skills for Change Management

A recent CEO Update breakfast included a panel discussion by executive recruiters who are working on placement of C-level non-profit and association executives. One message dominated the conversation-change. The panelists noted that leading an organization has changed and boards are no longer looking for the same type of CEO as they once were.

Boards now seek change leaders who are 'comfortable with change, embrace change, can lead change, and understand that change is the one true constant'. At the same time, with an expected tenure of 5 - 7 years, leaders can no longer make an impact by simply telling an organization what to do. Good leadership now seems to require "coaching" as well as motivating and inspiring.
